BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Baseball put up three runs in the final three innings, but fell to visiting Austin Peay by a score of 7-3 on Wednesday evening. After falling behind by seven, the Hilltoppers scratched back to within four with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth.
Leading off the seventh, Hunter Wood lined a double to left field, then he was driven in by a Chris Rogers double to the left-center field wall. Later in the inning, pinch hitter Grayson Ivey drove in Rogers from third base with a ground ball up the middle on a 3-2 pitch.
The next frame, Colie Currie led off with a towering triple off the center field wall - his team-best fifth of the season - and he was driven in by a Steven Kraft single two batters later. Of the seven Hilltoppers’ three-baggers this season, five are off the bat of Currie and two are from Wood.
Bailey Sutton made his first-career start on The Hill, going three innings while allowing two runs. He posted scoreless innings in the first and third, including putting away three Governors via strikes in his final frame. He finished with 69 pitches.
After Michael Hicks and Brett Vansant combined for the next five, Ty Hogan made his second mound appearance in four games. The catcher/reliever worked around two baserunners for a scoreless outing, including strike three looking for the 27th out.

With Austin Peay’s Parker Phillips on second base in the second inning, Brett Newburg hit a double off the right-center field wall. Played perfectly by Colie Currie with the relay to second baseman Tyler Robertson, then to catcher Hunter Wood, the Hilltoppers combined for an 8-4-2 out at the plate.

WKU hosts Conference USA opponent Rice for a three-game series at Nick Denes Field from Friday, April 21 to Sunday, April 23. The Owls (13-25, 4-11) did not play a midweek contest after their most recent league series vs. Southern Miss, where the Golden Eagles took 2-of-3 from the hosts at Reckling Park in Houston.
